Information for patients

Why take part in the study?

Participating in the DECODE VRL study gives you the opportunity to contribute to researching and improving the diagnosis of vitreoretinal lymphoma (blood cancer in the eye). Even though your participation is primarily for research and has no direct health benefit for you, the diagnosis and investigation may provide you with information about health conditions that may be important to better understand the condition. In addition, the research results could benefit future patients and improve the treatment of the clinical picture.

How does the study work?

Sampling

The removal of a vitreous body sample is part of clinical care for suspected lymphoma in the eye and is carried out as part of an operation (vitrectomy) to confirm or reject the lymphoma diagnosis. The material taken is examined for molecular markers to enable reliable diagnosis of VRL.

Duration and dates

Study participation lasts a total of 24 months. After taking the sample, four visits to the eye clinic are regularly planned as part of the necessary lymphoma aftercare. If no lymphoma is detected during the tissue examination, there will be two telephone calls about the study by the leading study center in Lübeck after one year and two years after the sample has been obtained.

investigations

Regular examinations, insofar as the diagnosis of lymphoma has been confirmed, include, in addition to a survey on disease-relevant facts, clinical investigations such as determination of visual acuity (BCVA), measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP), fundus copy (ocular background examination) and photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescence angiography. These tests are routine aftercare tests and are performed on both eyes.

Documentation of therapeutic success

The treatment of an identified lymphoma disease is not part of the study. However, the treatments carried out and the treatment success are recorded in the study documentation.

Data protection and rights

The treatment of an identified lymphoma disease is not part of the study. However, the treatments carried out and the treatment success are recorded in the study documentation.

  • Processing of data: All data is pseudonymized and used exclusively for the purpose of this study. Personal data, such as name and date of birth, is replaced by an identification code to protect your privacy. There is a data protection concept in cooperation with the data protection officer of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein and the University of Lübeck.
  • Right not to know: If you wish, you can decide whether you would like to be informed about additional health-related findings.
  • Right of Withdrawal: Your participation is voluntary and you can withdraw from the study at any time without giving reasons. Withdrawal has no negative impact on your medical care.
  • Sample storage: The samples taken will be stored in a biobank for up to 10 years after the study is completed and can be used for future research projects if you agree.

Participating study centers

The DECODE VRL study is a multicenter initiative that includes more than 13 leading eye clinics across Germany. These sample-collecting centers ensure that patients from different regions have access to the most advanced diagnostic methods. Each center brings specific expertise:
